Entrepreneurs, unique shopping create demand for Muskegon Heights’ downtown buildings

Muskegon Heights economic leaders say available space in the downtown shopping district is in high demand as more entrepreneurs seek to set up shop. That translates into economic advantages for the popular, and populated, central commercial district.

Most of us know Michigan is trudging through tough economic times, but for local communities, the news is not all bad.

Muskegon Heights has a population of a little more than 12,000. In the past month, a handful of people stopped by the city's Downtown Development Authority, interested in finding out how to start their own business.

The DDA believes more entrepreneurs are stopping by now that they've moved into an office in the heart of the downtown area. Right now, 45 businesses ranging from a popcorn store to a furniture store are located in Muskegon Heights, and more are on the way.
