The performing arts have always been an important part of Grand Rapids culture, and the proposed development of a new opera practice hall has many in the city digging deep into their pockets to make it happen.

GRAND RAPIDS -- Opera Grand Rapids is going green, once it raises a few more greenbacks.
The company has decided to seek Silver LEED certification for its new Betty Van Andel Opera Center, which is planned for construction on the west corner of Fulton Street at Carlton Avenue NE.
Groundbreaking, originally expected in summer, then scheduled for the fall, has been put on hold because of rising costs and the need to raise more money.
Plans for the center, which is to house a rehearsal hall, costume shop and offices in a two-story, 14,000-square-foot building, were announced in April. Since then, rising construction costs have pushed up the estimated price tag of the building from $1.95 million to $2.3 million.
