Ox-Bow School of Art plans centennial celebration, studio expansion

Locals credit a traditional, yet cutting-edge, art school camp outside Saugatuck for drawing artists to the region and making the town a destination for art collectors. That camp is about to celebrate its first century of rustic, artful living.

According to excerpts from the story:

Saugatuck Township, MI — Deep in the Lake Michigan shoreline woods and dunes, nestled along the shores of the Kalamazoo River lagoon is a camp of rustic cottages, dormitories and art studios. It’s an inspiring setting to paint, sketch or sculpt.

That’s what artists and art students have done for nearly a century at the Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists’ Residency.

Though the site is going through changes, it’s keeping its natural feel to continue inspiring more generations of artists. Jim Hanson, Saugatuck Township Planning Commission chairman and Saugatuck Douglas Art Club board member, said Ox-Bow is a good neighbor and played a central role in making the region a hub for the arts.
