To promote walkability, East Grand Rapids may revamp parking rules

The dilemma over what to do to make more parking available for East Grand Rapids businesses may be a moot point if city planners decide to do away with a parking space requirement for new shops in town, and that could stimulate pedestrian activity and street life in the village. City leaders say a recent study shows that office workers, not shoppers, are getting the parking spaces anyway.

According to excerpts from the story:

EAST GRAND RAPIDS -- Kris Carter could be the poster child for what city planners want for Gaslight Village. Last week, her list of a half-dozen errands didn't involve a drop of gasoline.

Grocery store. Flowers. Dry cleaning. Eyeglasses. Shirt. Sunscreen samples. All within a cardio-enhancing loop.

"We looked for two years for a house within a two to three-block radius," said Carter, who has owned two other homes in East Grand Rapids.

As city officials contemplate new rules that could increase the competition for on-street parking in Gaslight Village, their decision won't change Carter's way of life. She still will walk to work at Smooch Beauty Boutique and do all of her errands on foot.
