Grand Rapids pet owners get specialized veterinary care for four-legged friends

The human health care industry in Grand Rapids is booming, and so is the veterinary care for humans’ furry and feathered companions. Specialized pet health care that goes well beyond everyday veterinary care brings new veterinarians, and needy patients, to town.

According to excerpts from the story:

Some pet owners are going the extra mile for specialized treatment, from cataract surgery to chemotherapy, said Dan Lorimer, animal ophthalmologist and founder of Michigan Veterinary Specialists.

"Most pets are like your family members," Lorimer said. "Many people are willing to seek specialist care."

Lorimer and his staff recently opened Michigan Veterinary Specialists' third state location, this one in Grand Rapids at 1435 Michigan St. NE. They offer veterinary care by board-certified specialists, who receive four years of training beyond veterinary school.

Four specialists in ophthalmology, internal medicine, dermatology and oncology are on-site. They plan to add a general surgeon.
