Detroit News says Policy Conference just beginning of blunt talk, real change

West Michigan business and economic leaders didn’t pull any punches at last week’s inaugural policy conference and one southeast Michigan editor believes the conference is just the beginning of a movement for real change.

GRAND RAPIDS -- You get the feeling that there are times when the folks in west Michigan would like to draw a line down the middle of the state and say, "Stay on your side and we'll take care of business over here."

That wasn't the official theme of the inaugural West Michigan Policy Conference last week, but it was often its spirit. This is the west side's version of the Detroit Regional Chamber's annual gathering on Mackinac Island, and you didn't have to miss the fudge and horse manure to know that you weren't on the porch of the Grand Hotel.

On Mackinac, the mindset is to stay positive, avoid pointing fingers and not stray into divisive policy discussions.
