Van Andel science program prods budding scientists

Placing some petals beneath a microscope, Anthony Childress got a new perspective on flowers. His teachers hope the discovery prompts lots of questions that might mean a better future for the U.S. economy.

"It looks so pokey up in there," said the 9-year-old Campau Park Elementary School student. "I think it's cool."

Anthony will explore the "pokey" parts of plants and more next month when he enters the inaugural program of the Van Andel Education Institute Science Academy. The school, inside a former bank, boasts high-tech tools to prod his curiosity.
