Sculptures exhibited throughout downtown

Tom Otterness in Grand Rapids: The Gardens to the Grand features numerous large, bronze, and cartoonish sculptures throughout downtown. The event, organized by Meijer Gardens, is one of the largest public art exhibitions in the city’s history.

For two weeks, Otterness' playful works have appeared on streets of downtown Grand Rapids in preparation for the exhibition "Tom Otterness in Grand Rapids: The Gardens to the Grand."

The exhibition of 40 works of art officially opens Thursday on the eve of Grand Rapids' Festival of the Arts, where Otterness' comical "Horse and Rider"-- a masked woman atop a masked horse -- will stand guard on Calder Plaza, near the Art Sales Tents, admiring Alexander Calder's giant red stabile, "La Grande Vitesse."

Some 35 pieces are located along a two-mile stretch of downtown Grand Rapids. Another five are at Meijer Gardens.
