Sparta gets $750K state, local monies for streetscape, infrastructure overhaul

With the installation of attractive and inviting streetscapes, Sparta’s DDA hopes to entice shoppers to visit, and linger, downtown. The community was one of just seven municipalities to receive a hefty federal grant for transportation enhancements.

SPARTA - The village of Sparta plans to overhaul its streetscape and make other improvements thanks to a matching federal Transportation Enhancement grant. Sparta is one of seven municipalities in Michigan to receive a Transportation Enhancement grant in an announcement from the Michigan Department of Transportation in early January.

Administered by MDOT, the grants enable communities to invest in streetscape and non-motorized trails. With $376,500 in Transportation Enhancement funds and the same amount from the Sparta Downtown Development Authority, the village plans improvements including decorative brick crosswalks and lighting, benches, trees, shrubs and landscaping.
