Spring Lake takes another step toward city status

The Village of Spring Lake is looking more and more like a city, and village leaders are hoping that by becoming a city everyone will benefit from lower taxes, but the process promises to be a long one. City leaders from nearby Douglas, Michigan, a municipality that has been through the arduous red tape, have offered assistance.

SPRING LAKE -- Two months after voting to pursue converting Spring Lake Village into a city, the village council Monday approved the formation of a committee to spearhead that effort.

The council unanimously accepted the recommendations of Village President William Filber to appoint a five-member "point committee" to work through the steps needed for the village to become a city.

In December, the village council unanimously accepted recommendations of a citizens committee that the village move toward becoming a city -- a move that would break the village from Spring Lake Township and possibly lower taxes. The recommendation came after the 10-member committee studied the issue for nine months.
