West side's $5M school renovation moves forward

The renovation project for the former St. Adalbert School in Grand Rapids has already gathered $2 million in guaranteed gifts from private donors — bringing the program over one-third of the way towards its $5.6 million goal.

"This is simply an astounding beginning," said Bob Israels, president of Israels Designs for Living, one of the project’s earliest and most enthusiastic backers. "It shows how deeply people are responding to this project — and the benefits it promises for students, public education, and the entire community."

Nearly everything, from the roof to the windows to climate control and lighting systems, will require repair, rejuvenation, or replacement.
