Stimulus monies coming to West Michigan, Granholm visits to discuss spending plan

Some $853 million in federal stimulus money could come Michigan’s way for road improvements, but project promoters need to be on their toes with shovel-ready projects. In the meantime, $10 million is coming to West Michigan to help with next year’s I-196 makeover.

According to excerpts from the story:

GRAND RAPIDS -- In West Michigan, one immediate benefit of the federal stimulus funds the state will receive for road projects is about $10 million to add a third lane of traffic to a rebuilding project on Int. 196 through downtown Grand Rapids in 2010. Michigan Department of Transportation officials said today at a meeting with local leaders that some of the money will be spent on design work for the lane this year instead of waiting to add to the lane several years down the road.

The news was welcomed by Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, who said he was pleased traffic won't have to be disrupted more than once on the major thoroughfare. "That is one our crucial roads," Heartwell said. "It serves the Medical Mile, our principal job producing district."
