26-acre medical complex planned for Heartside

The neighborhood around Saint Mary's Health Care will get a face lift under a plan unveiled today by hospital officials.

The plan, presented to the City Commission today, will replace parking lots, vacant parcels and industrial sites with a medical campus, including tree-lined walkways and boulevards, a traffic circle and office buildings with retail space.

As it is now, the area "lacks a theme," Saint Mary's CEO Phil McCorkle said. "It tends to be an amalgamation of a lot of different buildings."

The new plan calls for creating a more uniform look for the neighborhood, he said, adding, "You're going to know you've arrived in a medical center."
