Township hopes to connect 80 miles of bike trails, link Hart to Holland

A series of picturesque bike trails takes riders along Lake Michigan through urban centers and down shade-lined boardwalks, and next year a proposed new 7.5-mile stretch could connect them all, creating an 80-mile-long recreation area for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.

According to excerpts from the story:

Fruitport Township officials are looking for money to construct a proposed $2 million bike path extension that would serve as a "regional connector" for the entire West Michigan area.

Township Deputy Supervisor Tim Tubergen said the project is in "preliminary stages," but donation commitments from local business owners look "promising."

"We're very optimistic that we'll get it," he said. "This is a real good project."

If the funding can be secured, Tubergen said the township would begin construction of the proposed 7 1/2 mile trail in 2009. Preliminary engineering of the project is finished, he said.
