West Michigan manufacturers look to energy efficient vehicles for business gains

Energy efficient trucks seems like a misnomer, but some West Michigan manufacturers are embracing them in response to market demand. Keep your eyes open — the trucks will be on the road this month.

Some manufacturers aren't waiting for mandates or incentives -- they're building energy-efficient vehicles because the market wants to buy them.

Western Michigan International, the fleet distributorship in West Michigan for Navistar International Corp.'s truck group, is introducing that company's line of hybrid trucks this month. The company invited municipal leaders as well as representatives from major West Michigan businesses, including Gerber Foods in Fremont, and Grand Rapids-based behemoths Meijer Inc., Steelcase Inc. [NYSE: SCS] and Gordon Food Service, to the unveiling Sept. 16.
