A new partnership between the Grand Rapids Public Schools and business leaders has created a first of its kind school dedicated to preparing students for college, and those students received a special welcome on their first day of school.
According to excerpts from the story:
GRAND RAPIDS -- Students starting the school year today at the new Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy were offered the red carpet treatment.
The school, based on a model of a Detroit "U-Prep" that boasts 90 percent of students advancing to college, enrolled 130 sixth- and seventh-graders chosen from 220 applicants.
The school has small class sizes and a curriculum designed to keep students on track for success in college.
