A taste treat from the Philippines – waffles on a stick, filled with everything from hot dogs to nuts – is now available at a new shop on Grand Haven's popular boardwalk. Two local entrepreneurs opened the restaurant, the first of its type in the nation, last weekend.
According to excerpts from the story:
Waffle Queens, located in the Riverview Shops at 211 S. Harbor Ave., will be serving waffles with a twist.
The shop, which is scheduled to open Saturday, will put waffles on a stick and fill them with everything from fruit to chocolate chips and hot dogs. The idea comes from the Philippines — where waffles on a stick filled with tropical fruits, such as mango and pineapple, are commonplace. The founders and owners of Waffle Queens, Luchi Nelson and Marife Vanderschuur, said they wanted to take something from their Filipino background and mix it with American culture to create a new concept for the Grand Haven market. "Grand Haven will actually be the first in the United States to have waffles on a stick. We are very excited," Nelson said. "The fillings in the Philippines are much more tropical and not suited to the market here. So we thought, 'What do Americans like?' Cheese and hot dogs!"
