Wind energy companies see Michigan’s west coast as a prime location for wind farms, yet many townships lack zoning guidelines for development or restrict the construction of wind turbines or farms. Whitehall Township is seeking to embrace the possible development, and the jobs, that come with alternative energy opportunities.

Whitehall Township may be the latest township to adopt an ordinance regarding wind turbines. Wind companies have been scouring Michigan’s west coast to find suitable, and willing, areas for erecting wind turbines to supply renewable energy.
Unlike some townships, Whitehall Township may open its arms to those companies. The ordinance will come before the township board for adoption at its regular Nov. 24 meeting.
“It passed in the planning commission and we sent it to the county,” said Township Supervisor Dennis Babcock. He said that after the county had a chance to comment on it, the ordinance would come before the township. While some townships in the area have crafted ordinances to keep turbines from being built, Whitehall Township has taken a different approach.
