Wall Street Journal ranks Grand Rapids among innovative leaders

Grand Rapids was placed among 20 up-and-comers in innovation among 12,000 U.S. cities in a survey published Saturday by The Wall Street Journal, done with help of IpIQ.

The U.S. Patent office database shows 141 patents granted to inventors in Grand Rapids during 2005.

The 6-year-old Van Andel Research Institute, cited by The Journal as a reason Grand Rapids is an up-and-comer, has had no patents issued to date, though it has 30 applications pending.
