Grand Rapids' Funky Buddha makes room for more sweaty yogis, 10 new assistants

Just six months after Grand Rapids' hot power yoga studio The Funky Buddha Yoga Hothouse opened its doors, its owners are already knocking down walls to accommodate more students.

An unoccupied commercial space behind the studio (1331 Lake Drive SE) will be turned into studio and private office space, growing the business from 2,000 to 3,400 square feet and increasing class sizes from 45 to 65 students. The owners will also hire 10 assistants to help manage the larger class sizes, in addition to beginning teacher training next January.

"We have additional locations we'd like to open in West Michigan, but we need qualified teachers first," says Chris Reinbold, who co-owns the studio with wife and teacher Kerri Reinbold. "As we grow, a lot is dependent on developing and retaining high quality teachers."

The studio opened December 1, 2010 with 18 classes per week, led by two instructors and supported by two part-time employees. With more than 3,000 students through the door since opening, The Funky Buddha now offers 30 classes a week, led by seven instructors and supported by four full-time staff members and five part-time employees.

The studio will close for the remodel on July 1, when they will offer a free outdoor yoga class at Rosa Parks Circle from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Funky Buddha instructors will offer subsequent outdoor classes at Grand Rapids' Wilcox Park and Oval Beach in Saugatuck until the studio reopens on July 10.
