RGTV: $2.3M Sidock Building latest of "great new buildings" in downtown Muskegon

By: Deborah Johnson Wood

After 14 months of construction, the $2.3 million Sidock Building has opened its doors in downtown Muskegon, the latest new structure on the former Muskegon Mall site.

“Since Sidock Group is an architectural and engineering firm, we wanted a presence downtown that could show off what we can do with our designs,” says Heather Caputo, Sidock spokesperson. “The company’s owner, Bill Sidock, wanted to invest in downtown Muskegon. He’s from the area and he saw an opportunity with all of these great new buildings going in downtown.”

Sidock Group occupies the second floor of the two-story, 15,900-square-foot building. The centerpiece of the main floor atrium is an iconic steel stairway, designed by Sidock Group and manufactured by Holland's Genzink Steel. Main floor commercial spaces of 2,780 square feet and 2,318 square feet are available on either side of the stairway.

The company hopes to attract retail, office or a restaurant. Caputo says negotiations are underway for the spaces, but they’ve not yet inked a deal.

“I think the lobby will attract people to the building,” Caputo says. “We’ve had a lot of people walking through to see our display on the green features of the building. We’re considering doing other events, like art shows, that will bring people in.”

Some of the building’s green features include the rehabilitation of a former Brownfield site, parking designed to meet but not exceed minimum local zoning requirements, a white reflective roof, windows on all four sides, low flow fixtures, and storm water seepage basins and perforated underground storm piping.

Sidock expects to receive LEED certification.
