Grand Rapids Greek Orthodox $1.6M addition nearly ready for bell tower dome

As the construction of a 2,250-square-foot addition to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 330 Lakeside Dr. NE moves steadily toward completion, crews will soon be placing an important architectural feature, a traditional dome and cross, atop the new bell tower.

“The dome is being framed in on the ground and Buist Sheet Metal Company will sheet it with metal and copper,” says Christopher Kallemeyn, Pioneer Construction. “Then it gets picked up as one big unit and set on top of the tower. There’s a cross going on top of the dome which will make the total height around 70 feet.”

Kallemeyn says setting the dome is at least three weeks away. In the meantime, workers will finish the exterior brickwork and wrap up framing in a glass wall that forms part of a new entry.

The addition brings seating capacity in the sanctuary to 350 and adds more space to the choir loft.

Crews also updated the church kitchen with new countertops, flooring and ceiling, and refurbished the existing handmade oak cabinets. The church is known for its annual Greek luncheons and dinners that draw hundreds of people each year.

“The kitchen was getting worn out,” Kallemeyn says. “They use their kitchen a lot. It’s not just for making coffee on Sunday morning; they’re in here two, three, four days a week. They’re in the kitchen cooking and they’re talking Greek to each other; not just the older family members, but the younger generations, too. It’s like a big family, big fun, lots of conversation.”

Pioneer Construction is the construction manager. Constantine George Pappas AIA Architecture/Planning handled the expansion’s architectural design.
