Collecting In Plain Sight

G-Sync Events for the weeks of 09/10 - 17/2009
By Tommy Allen

If you are like me, you have a special location in your house or apartment that's set aside for mail not important enough to read right away, but potentially too important to throw away. By the end of summer, my stack becomes large enough to pose a fire hazard, so I always need to set aside a few hours to separate the wheat from chaff, so to speak.

As I sorted my junk mail this past weekend, I stumbled on colorful postcard from Grand Valley State University that made the drudgery all worth while.  GVSU was announcing that their entire art collection of nearly 9,000 works of art have been cataloged and is up for display online for all to see.

This  may seem like no big deal to those familiar with the world of art.. But to others who are becoming acquainted with art, this is a chance to peer into this massive collection featuring not just international artists, but also some of the best artists working in our community.

As we approach ArtPrize in the coming weeks, many will no doubt have questions about some of the art and its meaning.  Anyone who is interested in learning more about particular artists may want to look at what GVSU has deemed worth of collecting as a primer.

While not all local artists have their art as a part of the GVSU online collection, it just means that their work may also be a part of another fine collection elsewhere in this region.

So this week it is worth noting and celebrating those grand institutions and businesses that place a high value on original art by investing in the artist community.

Choose local.…and often.
