Afro Zuma: Hit that Perfect Beat

Afro Zuma, Grand Rapids’ afro-funk band, will take the stage at Founders Brewing Company during the brewery’s much-beloved free Thursday night concert series with a bit of a surprise.

On Thursday, they will debut a brand new horn section with the same stunning, hip-shaking grooves you have come to expect, but now from an expanded 13-piece band!

Josh Dunigan, the band’s rhythmic leader for the last 10 years (and also member of Cabildo and WaZoBia), says to "plan on the same great rhythms to keep those feet moving as we delve into the works of Afrobeat pioneers including Fela Kuti, Antibalas and The Budos Band."

Opening for AF is Love Fossil, the real deal science band whose sound is best described as mythical, dino-fetish, story-driven rock-n-roll with band members from a range of sources like Founders’ staff and even a GVSU college professor (Benjamin Hunter).

The best part is that this act got its start at an open mic night at the old Founders location, so it very fitting that these chaps keep blowing back into one of our city’s favorite beer halls with some great tunes that defy carbon dating, but are good enough for mating -- “boom boom acka lacko boom boom.”
