ArtPrize: Seventh Heaven (or Hell?)

Event Opening: Wednesday, Sept. 23 (through Oct. 11).
Here's the thing: We are at the point now that when someone says ArtPrize there are enough possible reactions that we really need a Kinsey-like scale to measure one's place on the spectrum.

For some it is like the seventh coming of Christ if you close your eyes and listen to the passion in their voices. For others,, it seems to trigger a long list of grievances (some good, some just overused/worthless).

And that is the beauty of the festival because just as it is in the “art world,” the diversity of opinions that ArtPrize unleashes locally is not much different than, say, a person attending Disneyland – everyone has a favorite and a less-than-favorite experience to share in conversation.

So find your peace this year with ArtPrize 7. I'll return next week with a few recommendations on how we can learn to embrace it, play in it, hack it, dance around it (and its boundaries) -- or maybe how to leave town if that is what you think you will need to help you through the next 18 days.

But just remember: no matter where you fall on the spectrum, pace yourself because if we have learned anything, Artprize 7 won't really be over until the last award has been presented and the final doors close on the 160+ venues hosting more than 1,500 artists this year.
