Erick Picardo: 25-Year Retrospective

Thursday, August 29, 6 - 9 p.m.
Looking back on one's career, it is easy to come to the conclusion that time flies. But what if this flight was about more than time?

Now 25 years into his career, Dominican artist and Grand Rapids resident Erick Picardo describe this reflective moment as "Vuela Grito," a flying shout and the title of his show at the Goei Center.

Fans of this prolific and community-focused artist are encouraged to attend Vuela Grito and experience first-hand the multi-dimensional and seamless mix of painting, music, poetry, storytelling, and dance. His work is experience that has always, at its core, possessed the desire to illustrate the bridge-building aspects of Picardo's nature and his culture.

In addition to being able to see examples of Picardo's artwork on the walls and the chance to hear his drumming, this event also offers another side of this artist, who will present his poetry as a spoken word performance that promises to be just as lyrical and vibrant as his paintings. He will be joined by FALCON & Los Seguidores, and dancer Andrea Nightingale.

"There is great joy and hope present in every painting," says Picardo, who is evolving in the direction of contemporary techniques and forms while retaining the vibrant palette and diverse context that is uniquely Caribbean. "My paintings serve as a reminder of all that humanity is capable of being, inspiring viewers to strive toward a better self and better world."

Funds raised from this night will be applied towards his Fall art projects, including his 2013 ArtPrize entry.

Admission: $10.
