Emma's Revolution: Creating community safety nets

It is not every day that a musical group espousing the virtues of a community taking care of its members comes to town, so we wanted to create a bit of extra space this week to highlight this act.

Emma's Revolution, the award-winning music duo of Pat Humphries and Sandy O, will be in Grand Rapids to support Family Promise, a network of faith-based organizations that has been providing temporary shelter for the homeless of our region since 1997.

This is the first time that Family Promise has hosted a fundraiser of this size and they hope to pack the church with community members who are looking for a night of inspiring harmonies married to gusty social justice lyrics.

Emma's Revolution has performed all over the world. Their credits include performing for the Dalai Lama, being praised by iconic folk singer Pete Seeger, and even having their songs covered by another contemporary of American folk music, Holly Near. One very special highlight that stands out to the band is their Grand Prize award in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

When they arrive in Grand Rapids, it will be another milestone as this is the first concert hosted by Plymouth United Church of Christ in collaboration with All Souls Community Church for Family Promise.

"The key to Family Promise is they are one of a few organizations in our area that provide shelter for families (parents with children) in a housing crisis," says Rev. Colleen Squires, minister of All Souls Community Church. “When a single mother with teen boys become homeless, they are often put in different shelters, but Family Promise provides care for these types of families and keeps the family together."

This concert will raise awareness as well as funds to ensure that when a family in our region has a housing crisis arise, Family Promise can activate their excellent support network that is well-known for getting families into housing fairly quickly.

Admission: $18 advance / $20 door / $15 students
