Stephen Frykholm: GR's Natural Design Wonder

Friday, Mar. 29, 7 p.m. lecture
It might seem a bit early to be celebrating the warm weather activity of picnicking. But if the Grand Rapids Art Museum has its way, a unique set of posters on display come Friday night will have you jonesing to pack up that picnic basket.

Stephen Frykholm, creative director and VP at Herman Miller, designed the 20 Herman Miller Picnic posters for the company's annual picnic between 1970 and 1989.

Now, for the first time ever, this historic collection of prints has come home to the GRAM's permanent collection -- an honor no other museums can boast.

Unlike other art exhibitions, this particular show provides a look into the artist's design process, featuring sketches, photocopy collages, color swatches, and test silk-screens from Frykholm's personal archives. It is truly a remarkable and rare opportunity to peel away the layers of his process. Frykholm will also be presenting a lecture on these vibrant works in the auditorium on Friday night.

"This exhibition is concurrent with the major traveling exhibition, Graphic Design: Now in Production, on view both at GRAM and The Fed at Kendall College of Art and Design," says Dana Friis-Hansen, GRAM director and CEO. "We have a commitment to showing the work of local and regional artists in a larger context. Steve Frykholm is a global design leader, and we're thrilled that he's a Grand Rapidian and, as creative director, has created such a great body of work for Herman Miller."

For the debut of these works on paper, LaFontsee Gallery has thoughtfully presented these works for the exhibition. The artist will be greeting the public from 6 - 7 p.m., prior to the lecture. This exhibition runs until May 12.
