Sass Fest: DIY + DIT Bliss

Saturday, Nov. 23, 5 - 7 p.m.
On Saturday people hoping to better adopt the DIY or the DIT (as in Do It Yourself or Together) lifestyle will want to attend the 3rd annual Sass Fest, an event curated by Have Company’s Marlee Grace.

This two-hour event harnesses the same delicate (but no less powerful) style of the Have Company shop, as Grace has created an event that mixes in instruction with presentations from folks she thinks are some of the most inspiring people in our region.

Each year the goal of Sass Fest has always been to provide people with techniques to produce handmade goods, but most importantly to inspire them to go home and make their own via the short talks centered around past topics like ‘zine creation, printmaking and even a special talk from Avenue for the Arts’ community organizer Jenn Schaub.

This free event is sure to spark your inner creative spirit on to bigger things; as the holidays are upon us, creating something unique and from you is sure to please and have more meaning than just another scarf from the mall.

“I created this festival not as a way to just promote another market driven by consumerism,” says Grace, “but this year I wanted to use Sass Fest to conquer loneliness.

To aid in this mission, Grace wants folks to come out and meet members of the DIY & DIT community by sitting next to one another. This purposeful engagement allows those in the space creating to begin to cultivate honest and raw conversations and new relationships about what is and isn’t working.

Grace is happy that Sass Fest is able bring together this maker community in a fresh way that gets people off of their digital cloud via sites like Etsy and Pinterest. She’d like a community to be formed not around the online digital world alone but around a space where real-time sharing of skills and ideas can take place.

Sometimes when building a community it can be so much more than just boardrooms and conference tables; sometimes it is created over a ball of yarn and a couple knitting needles.
