A.B. for President: Hail to the Commander in Chief of Hip Hop

Friday, Nov. 2, 9 p.m. / 9:30 p.m. Toast
What do you do if you are the lead singer of one of the area’s most energetic hip hop acts on hiatus, but are still enjoying a creative bump from your fun and infectious "Miami Vice"-influenced Fluorescent Black EP?

Well, if you are A.B. (lead singer of A.B! and Coconut Brown), you run for President. Well, sort of like that.

On the occasion of his new EP release, AB is running for President this Friday night. A.B. invites not only the entire city down to the Pyramid Scheme by way of his event partners Bottom 40 and Generation XY for Michigan, but he is also pulling together a Presidential-sized cabinet as other hip hop artists join him on the stage.

“Let’s be honest. Everyone is feeling pretty frustrated at this point in the election season, but I see this as a time that we can come together in the spirit of having some fun,” says A.B. “My new EP is really a tongue-in-cheek take on modern politics with a definite nod to the current state of our local hip hop scene.”

The new release is filled with a mixture of classic hip hop beats, samples of live instruments, and a real influence from the soul sounds of James Brown with a dash of Tribe Called Quest’s later material.

On stage, A.B. will be joined by musicians and MCs including DJ Snax, Nixon, Ajax Stacks, Fable, Dante Cope, DJ Mr. Jay B, Ed Nino, Tekh Togo, and Miguel Cruz with speeches by Chaka Holley on women’s rights and a key note speech by the man himself, A.B.

When pressed for when we can expect more from A.B! & Coconut Brown, A.B. says, "What’s a good political answer to this one?”

In the end, after the laughter dies down, A.B. says, “You know, given the right entertainment and material, I know we would kill it.” (I am guessing that means it's not over yet, A.B! & Coconut Brown fans.)
