Indie Rock Meets Hip Hop: A New Vaudeville

One of the real perks of having a vibrant live music scene that rivals Portland, Austin and other Meccas of urban cool is that you get a chance to sample the uniqueness of your culture just about any night of the week -- and often, in venues just steps from each other.

And while blended shows of diverse musical acts sharing the stage is nothing new, as we’ve witnessed everything from tribute shows to genre collaborations like Trip The Light. Now, Chance Jones, along with Mike Saunders, promises to bring something really exciting as they showcase Indie Rock and Hip Hop on one stage at Founders Brewing Company.

“It's very appealing to me to have variety. It's what fascinates me about vaudeville, burlesque and even the archaic idea of showing a news reel or a cartoon and a short film before the full-length film in the movie houses of old,” says Jones (aka Joshua Burge), who will be performing with the full band for the first time in a while. “This is the first of what I hope becomes a repeated adventure into exhibition from three incredibly exciting mediums.”

The three mediums he is referring to is the opportunity to not only hear Grand Rapids’ Chance Jones and the Pistolbrides, but also Detroit’s Clear Soul Forces.

Spoken word artist Azizi Jasper, a transplant from Flint who calls Grand Rapids his home now, will be the night’s emcee, weaving in and out with his poetry.

Rounding out the third pillar will be the showcase of live art created by artists Reuben Garcia and George Eberhardt (aka the Gruesome Twosome) with DJ Mr. Fables on the decks throughout the night.

If Indie Rock and Hip Hop culture is not your thing, that’s cool, too, because later this weekend on Sunday from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., you can return to Founders for their monthly first and third Sunday live music program with the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra for some brass in your glass.

Admission: $5.00. 21+ or older
