LadyFest: International Ladies Nights

This week, I am attempting something very deliberate in G-Sync Events. I am pinning my focus exclusively on four events being hosted by women for women (and men who love them). After the gripping headlines from the Steubenville case that began our week, we need more dialogue between the sexes. I invite everyone to consider one of these fine events sure to expand our understanding of one another.

Starting off this week's lineup is the return of LadyFest, a global movement of women encouraging local communities to not only present an arts-filled festival event , but also an opportunity to host workshops led by women. This is Grand Rapids' second time hosting LadyFest, which has majestically expanded to two, very full days this year.

The free workshops take place on Saturday afternoon. This year, instead of being confined to just one venue, they will be spread over three spaces located on the Avenue for the Arts.

The Heartside Gallery and Studio will host a series of art fueled sessions including original book making, a Get yr Tits Outta my Comics lecture on the history of women superheroes, and a visioning session where guests will be encouraged to draw their own heroine with the assistance of artist Alysha Lac.

The other two workshop venues will be offering classes on women's health issues, urban gardening, musical instruction and history, and a host of DIY techniques from some of the area's most talented artists. Immediately after the workshops wrap is a potluck diner at the new downtown location of The Bloom Collective (8 Jefferson SE) at 5:30 p.m.

On Friday and Saturday nights at The Pyramid Scheme (68 Commerce SW), LadyFest is all about the music.

Appearing in Grand Rapids for the first time will be acts Nite Jewel and Jean Grae, a real pioneer in the underground hip-hop scene in NYC. Additionally, Invincible, the wildly popular Detroit-conscious rap artist, will be hitting the stage with the rapid-fire phrasing that is wining over fans locally as it has the world over.

And just like last year, LadyFest presents an all ages variety show that starts early and features lots of new acts as well as a few that rarely hit the stage. It is great family fun with women in the spotlight.

"For me, Ladyfest is so important because not only does it give women our due props for all of the amazing work we create, it also gives us the opportunity to share the skills and info we have with others," says Sarah Scott, co-founder and one of the volunteer organizers of Grand Rapids’ LadyFest. "I really like that we feature women as performers, leaders, and hosts at our events, but what is really special is that anyone can come to celebrate and learn with and from us."

All proceeds from Grand Rapids' LadyFest will be donated to Our Kitchen Table, a food and social justice nonprofit making a difference for women and families in our community.
