Lights Out: Lasers at the Ready. Go.

Saturday, Oct. 13, 9 p.m.
It is not rare in Grand Rapids to catch an art band at the start of its career, or the chance to see an experimental performance-based art piece. What is rare is the chance to see a stellar night of art bands married to a performance-based light show. This is what is promised to those who venture out for light and sound installation Lights Out at the Con Artist Crew Gallery at 1111 Godfrey.

This special night of music and light seeks to explore the relationship and intersection of projections, lasers and music a in  concert event promising to be an extra-sensory experience.

Headliner Faux Fur and the Extra Texture will provide a musical exercise in experimentation. The band, which began between friends and co-workers, includes Ed Parauka (guitar, vox) Nathaniel Mabie (guitar, bass, keys), Crowder (keys, vox, bass, guitar, and percussion), and the Rouge Diva Don (drums).

As a band on the music scene for just about a year and with no recordings (yet), Faux Fur is a serious act. They are pushing not only the bounds of songwriting and structure, but in this special performance, they will solidify their commitment to being fearless in their format.

The bill also includes Bang Crush, a duo made up of eclectic beats, synthesizers, and Nintendo. Opening the night will be the electronic music of Fresh Koko.

The lights come from LazerBoyz, a new group of performance-based visual artists keenly focused on the belief that  immersive light via lasers can transform a space.

The LazerBoyz run with a philosophy that is often counter to the seriousness of fine art, trading the stuffy for the light-hearted. According to the group, they simultaneously pull from art’s more serious movements, like Bauhaus, to the transcendental design sense that emerges out of a teenager's bedroom, bringing childlike wonder to viewers.

Admission: $5.
