The Matrix: Altered Theatrical Universe

Tuesday, Mar. 19, 7:30 p.m.
The Matrix is a film that needs almost no introduction. It is still one of the biggest movies to close out the last century, combining ground-breaking effects with a moving spiritual story line as old as time. We all seek some form of redemption.

What makes watching The Matrix really special at DeVos Performance Hall is the opportunity to hear the score live with the Grand Rapid Symphony under the direction of a new composer, Don Davis.

And while some may say that it might be a form of sacrilege to divert from the giants of classical music, you would be missing the real power of this score, which has been described as one influenced by contemporary heavyweights like Philip Glass, Steve Reich, John Adams, David Lang, and Aaron Kernis.

"The real challenge for the conductor is interacting with the orchestra, staying on time with the audio clicks, and keeping the tempo while still following the music," says the CAMI Music’s Alex Rabens on producing a live musical score in time with thrilling action and adventure. "The orchestra's musical performance must be in perfect synchronization with the film, which is a real challenge in a live setting!"

So unlike a movie theatre where everything comes prepackaged for your enjoyment, this added suspense of a live performance is sure to keep both you and our local musicians on the edge of their seats.

Take the red pill, and escape to the Grand Rapids Symphony!

Admission: Starting at $32
