Intersection Lounge's Infected Mushroom show, it might be the perfect time to begin your techno music education at a venue that is tiny in space (compared to the Section) but long on charm and powerful sonic pleasures.
Surprising to me as I listen to the big dark beats of Memo as organizer Austin Churchill and I text back and forth, this act appearing live at Quinn and Tuites is not only playing in my neighborhood of Creston but it turns out that the artist who is Memnok, Jeremy Brown, is also a neighbor of mine. (Small world, right?)
Brown, a native of West Michigan, draws heavily on the influences of dark tribal beats that reminded me often of the jungle-influenced sounds I recall coming off the fringe of the dance scene at the very end of the 1980s as we merged into the 90s.
For Memnok, it is just as much a riff on the past as it is an homage to those rhythms that makes up his music. It also is pure techno in the drive, and that is what makes the marriage of the two so unique and pleasurable. It is forcing me to conjure up long-buried thoughts of dark rooms and venues I recall from places like New York and Detroit during that time as well as far-off venues like Berlin.
Memnok's music really seeks to honor techno's birthplace of Detroit – a fact he acknowledges often in the descriptions posted on sites from SoundCloud to Beatport.
Memnok, according to Churchhill, puts on a great show and the timing is right to catch him here in this intimate setting as he is in talks with a few leading producers of techno to take his sound further.
"The techno shows at Quinn and Tuites we have been producing have not only been free but they are a blast," says Churchill, "and the best part is that we are seeing our numbers rapidly increase with each new show we host. But the real bonus is how the music sounds as we engineer our sound from all four corners so you can actually hear the sub frequencies needed for a real techno experience!"
In 2012 Memnok toured Europe, including Poland, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands' biggest club, Westerunie. Brown is also in the works to not only grow his techno label but add a new minimal music label, too.
Memnok has upcoming releases planned for record labels such as Amazone Records, Natchstrom Schallplatten, and his label Hex.
