25th Anniversary of Pride: Plus, the Debut of a Parade of Pride

Pride: Saturday, June 15, 1 - 10 p.m., Parade: Sunday, June 16, 2 p.m.
Grand Rapids' Pride has taken many roads, literally and figuratively, over its 25-year history. This weekend, when it returns to downtown, not only will the annual event come full circle, but it will also take steps toward a new event.

Pride has migrated over the years from venues like Ah-Nab-Awen's grassy knoll to John Ball Park's ball diamond, before the last few years in Riverside Park's urban forest where they netted their highest attendance of nearly 11,000 guests. This year, the event moves to Vandenberg (Calder) Plaza.

At this annual event will be a host of businesses and nonprofit organizations that support our LGBT community. Entertainment includes Hedwig and The Angry Inch, Susan P., Jes K., Black Cat Bone, In Harmony, Jane Deyoung Trio, Lady Ace Boogie, Bermudas, two drag shows, and the festival's favorite closing act, The PotatoeBabies!

Come back the next day for the debut of the Parade of Pride, a family-friendly event that will feature more than 25 different groups representing the businesses, organizations, and entertainment of this region.

The parade will start on Ottawa and Lyon, head east on Lyon, north on Ionia, and end at Michigan St. It will run about 30 minutes and include a homecoming appearance from Wendy Jo Carlton, creator/director of the lesbian web series "Easy Abby," as well as very special guest, Ru Paul's Drag Race contestant Miss Ivy Winters on the Rumors float.

The Grand Marshalls of the 2013 inaugural Parade of Pride will be two men who have been partners for 49 years and are the former owners of The Apartment Lounge, Ed Ladner and Milt Lennox. These men might have served drinks, but because of their bar's unique place in this area, they most certainly served the LGBT community with a listening ear over the last half-century.

Surrounding the annual celebration this year will be a pre-party event hosted by Rob Bliss, who is filming a new viral video inspired by LGBT current events. A host of area restaurants and bars in the area will be offering specials for attendees including Parade of Pride sponsor Barfly Ventures (Hopcat, Stella's, McFadden's and Grand Rapid Brewing Company). Details to be revealed on the Parade's Facebook page, but you have to attend the parade to get a wristband gaining you access to these special Pride offers.

Admission: $1. donation at Pride’s gates / Parade is free.
