Mega '80s Game Quest and Pub Crawl: Ready Player One, GO!

Saturday, July 21, 11 AM Registration, Kickoff at Noon
It is hard for anyone who was not in diapers during the '80s to not feel a sense of Déjà vu as we look around and listen at our current cultural landscape.

No, I'm not talking about world politics or even the environmental state we are in. I'm talking about the pop culture and fashion of '80s and they are definitely back. And with a vengeance.

The Grand Rapids Public Library is getting totally tubular (and creative) with their programming as they marry Ernest Cline's popular novel, Ready Player One, with totally hot downtown venue Stella’s as they host the Mega '80s Game Quest and Pub Crawl.

In the book, people seeking the fortune left behind by the protagonist, who died in 2044, must solve a series of puzzles rooted firmly in a time period the now deceased deeply loved. You guessed it: the '80s.

And in a nod to this wildly popular book, teams of two or more will compete to complete 10 challenges in a quest around downtown Grand Rapids.

These teams can register the day of the event at Stella's from 11:00 a.m. to noon before the event begins at Noon.

The key requirement is that each team must have a camera-ready smart phone preloaded with the SCVNGR app and all members of the team must be 21 years or older. Sorry, drinking is involved as this is a pub-crawl after all.

In addition to the library’s impressive lineup of summer programming is the up-coming lecture by the 2012 Michigan Notable Book Award winner and filmmaker Michael Moore. Moore will be in Grand Rapids to discuss his latest book, Here Comes Trouble as a part of the Grand Rapids Public Library 2012 GR Reads on Thursday, July 26 at 7:00 p.m. at Fountain Street Church (24 Fountain St NE).
