Salmagundi: calm seas (and a Tribute to Rikk David)

Saturday, Nov. 10, 8 p.m.
Modern dance, drama, and local bands converge twice a year on the stage at Wealthy Theatre for a thrilling production. Each Fall, that potpourri of art, aptly named "Salmagundi," brings choreographers, musicians, and dancers from farther out than any modern dance event has ever been able to do before. Every aspect of what they do here is nothing short of inspiring.

"Salmagundi: calm seas" is widely considered, according to ArtPeers’ Erin Wilson, “to be the strongest lineup of any modern dance concert in Grand Rapids history.”

After years, if not a full decade, of a floundering modern dance scene in our region, many credit the collaborative energy of this annual event as one of the reasons why we are seeing a renaissance of dance in our region.

But according to Wilson, it is more than just  the dancers that have contributed to this success. Now, concentric circles of outsiders including videographers, editors, musicians, composers, choreographers, dancers, costumers, and lighting designers are all converging at this community venue. It is the kind of attention that good art buys a city, not what you manufacturer with PR and flashy banners.

Along with three original, short, "dance on camera" video pieces that will be presented Nov. 9, "Salmagundi" features music by Orpheum Bell and many others. But the live dance performance is the beating heart of the fourth annual concert.

The producing entity of this event, Dance in the Annex (DITA), has lovingly dedicated "Salmagundi: calm seas" to legendary lighting designer Rikk David, who frequently volunteered his lighting expertise at DITA events at Wealthy Theatre. Rikk passed away unexpectedly in September and was profiled in Rapid Growth. He moved moutains for so many artists in our community. This is a fitting tribute to his legacy and love of dance.

The production clocks in in just under 90 minutes (so you will have time to catch a late dinner or a night of drinking at one of the local pubs within walking distance).
