Urban Cycling Extravaganza: Wheels Up and on the Street

If things keep at this place, Grand Rapids could very soon go rom a bike-friendly city to THE BIKE CITY (if only for the Midwest), as more and more cyclist and urban cycling events continue to raise awareness in our metro area.

On Saturday, the West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC), in partnership with Grand Rapids Bicycle Co., Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition, The Spoke Folks, Catalyst Partners, and many other community-focused groups, will host the very first Urban Cycling Extravaganza at Grand Rapids Bicycle Company’s new storefront in East Grand Rapids.

This family-friendly, awareness-building event will feature a five-mile ride from GRBC’s new EGR location, ending at John Collins Park along the beautiful banks of Reeds Lake.

Once at John Collins Park, attendees will be treated to food from area restaurants and educational sessions on urban biking, as well as movies and live demonstrations of new cycling products.

“Grand Rapids has a growing urban cycling consciousness. This is witnessed in the rise of new bike shops and cycling organizations, as well as the changes to our cityscape with bike lane and bike rack additions,” says WMEAC Hospitality Coordinator Jen Shaneberger, whose committee shaped this event. "We hope that through this event, many will come to celebrate the cycling lifestyle, and hopefully inspire others to adopt it.”
