Westside Wonderland: Venture to the BestSide

This week, G-sync events are dedicated to the great holiday-themed musical programming happening this weekend in the city.

When the Kent County String Band returns to the retro-influenced Tip Top Deluxe Bar and Grille, it will not be with just their new musical program, Westside Wonderland. They will also be bringing a few guest artists who will also be stepping out of their comfortable present as they journey back into the past.

It is not a secret that the KCSB loves to discover and present music from a period of time that many have forgotten. Part of their charm and attraction is listening to music created a century ago.

For this night’s concert event, you can expect two very lively sets. The first features many of their favorite old tunes, but for the second (and extended) set, the band will welcome guest vocalists Lydia Clowney, Matt Forbush of Alexis, Erin Marie of Tokyo Morose, and Jim Danger of Dangerville.

All of these artists will be performing a classic or rare Christmas song, but also joining the KCSB for another song of their choosing. I hope I won’t get in too much trouble for divulging, but Forbush -- always the master of the mic -- has selected "Santa Baby" as well as Cash’s "Ring of Fire." Marie has a selected a tune by Smokey Robinson. Get your video cameras ready to capture and roll.

“We don’t want people to get the wrong idea,” says Chris Eddy of the KCSB. “We will have plenty of Christmas songs, but they will be peppered throughout the night’s performance.”

The fact that most of these vintage songs clock in at just a few minutes, according to Eddy, could be a good thing for those just wanting to hear Christmas music. Make it quick if you have to visit the bathroom; you could miss something good if you linger too long at the stall checking your Facebook.
