Women's Show: Voices Carry

Saturday, Mar. 23, 6 - 10 p.m.
Artists often gather in public to banter around a limitless range of topics. Sometimes, the result of this intimate communion is that we find there is real power waiting to be explored. Often, art is the proper channel through which to filter such abstract ideas.

This is pretty much how the Women's Show began. Artists and organizers Jodi Schmalz and Chloe Viening-Butler began dialogue around the topic of post-childbirth, something both women share in common.

Building around this theme, the women began to curate from the local pool of artists. Schmalz also wanted to make sure they included other artists (including men) who had in someway created works with women as a key part of their pieces.

The result of this intentionality is a finely crafted celebration of women that will be told via the voices of more than 10 visual artists, performers, poets, photographers, and dancers throughout night’s energetic programming.

And Schmalz wanted to create special opportunities within this event for others as well.

"I try and invite artists who have never exhibited before to keep our events fresh for all of us," says Schmalz. "It can be a confidence builder for new artists. (Most importantly), this show is an opportunity for artists and guests to celebrate whichever part of womanhood they please."

The ambitious nature of this show is reflected in the dynamic range of topics and challenges that face women. Works explore themes on motherhood, personal strength, overcoming challenges, and even honesty.

And just as the song says, 'I'm every woman, it's all in me,' at the Women's Show, I am quite certain there will be something for every woman and man.
