Developers vie for coveted downtown Rockford property

The site of a former car dealership in the heart of downtown Rockford is a primo opportunity for city leaders to build density with urban infill. It won’t sit vacant for long if area developers have their way.

According to excerpts from the story:

ROCKFORD -- Three suitors will try to win the city's heart with ideas for redeveloping the site of a razed downtown car dealership. A.J. Veneklasen Inc., Ron Riebschleger and Wolverine Building Group, in association with Robert Grooters Development Co., have submitted letters of interest in a public-private partnership at 12 S. Main St., site of the former Northland Buick Pontiac GMC.

The city bought the 0.4 acre property last year after the dealership owners sold their franchise to Dan DeVos and closed. The building was demolished in anticipation of a new project.

"There's a lot that could be done there," said John Jeffries, spokesman for A.J. Veneklasen. "The downtown area offers some great flexibility. "Downtown Rockford is still a very viable area for development."
