To avoid trouble, companies should outline policies for employees who use social media to post grapevine news about their companies, lawyers told attendees at aimWest's recent Midwest Social Media ConFab. Carefully crafted policies will help employees from accidentally releasing confidential information and protect the company's reputation, they said.
Panelist Greg Ripple, an associate with the Grand Rapids law firm of Miller Johnson, told listeners that companies needs to take the same precautions they take with any other communication to cultivate, protect and control their images because the social media is an outlet of information to the public.

“Now it’s just one new type (of communication) that’s far more instantaneous,” Ripple said. “And once it’s out on the blogosphere or out in the world of Twitter, you can’t delete it. Employees have to be reminded of that often.” Accidentally spreading confidential information is a big technology-related concern for companies, and social media provides a new spin on that.
