Grand Rapids' newest sustainable clothing shop puts down roots in East Hills

A new men's and women's specialty apparel store will open at 963 Cherry St. SE this August, at the former location of Hop Scotch Children's Store.

"It will be geared toward consumers who are conscientious, and social responsibility is a key," says Swirls Boutique owner Cindy Speenstra. "It will be a destination store for people who are looking for unusual or specific items."

Speenstra is finalizing the product lines that will be carried within the 1,800-square-foot Swirls Boutique, and says prices will reflect the quality of goods.

"The pieces offered will not only be artistic, but will be made of quality material, with everything from everyday wear to pieces that are more unique for special events," she says.

Speenstra says the aesthetic of the shop will be a contemporary take on a traditional intimate boutique.

And although she doesn't have a background in retail, Speenstra does have several degrees from Calvin, Aquinas and Michigan State University and experience operating a private school, and says she felt compelled to open a sustainable apparel shop in the area.

"I like the sense of community that I've found here, and Swirls will be active in that community," says Speenstra. "I want to have a positive effect on our little corner of the world."

She plans to fill three to four customer service and sales positions within the boutique, along with another three for support services.
